Radio Remote Unit cable connection guidelines

Cable tagging guidelines for RRU

Here we are going to learn about the cable connection (CPRI/Power/Ground) and tagging for RRU.

Cable tagging for 2.3Ghz RRU:

There are two version in 2.3Ghz RRU- V1;V2

Reliance Jio- Radio Remote Unit (RRU)

RRU ( Radio Remote Unit)

Antenna is connected to RRU and RRU is controlled by CDU which is placed inside the shelter. The connection between RRU and CDU is optical which is know as CPRI in Jio project.

Separate RRU's are used for each band and each sector, which means 3 RRU (1 for 850Mhz, 1 for 1.8Ghz, 1 for 2.3Ghz) for one sector.

Reliance Jio antenna sectors identification

Here in this this post we are going to discuss about the Reliance jio antenna sectors and the ways to identify it.

There are 3 sectors for every site:
  1. Alpha      ( α)
  2. Beta         (β)
  3. Gamma    (γ)
Alpha Sector:
It is identified by Blue colour and denoted by α
Beta Sector:
It is identified by Red color and denoted by β
Gamma Sector:
It is identified by Green colour and denoted by γ

How to Identify the Sector & Frequency bands:

By looking at the colour, sector is identified. By looking at the number of strips of colour frequency band is identified.

Frequency Band is identified by the number of colour strings

For 850Mhz- There will be 3 colour strings for each sector
For 1800Mhz- There will be 2 Colour strings for each sector
For 2300Mhz- There will be 1 colour strings for each sector

Yellow colour string denote the port number,eg. one yellow colour denotes first port.

2G,3G,4G- Reliance jio Antennas

In this post we are going to discuss about the 2G,3G and 4G ports and Antennas used in Reliance Jio project and how to Identify them.
As in earlier topic you have seen there are two types of Antennas used Ace & Rosenberger

How to distinguish between Ace & Rosenberger Antennas
  1. By checking the Port order.
  2. By checking the frequency bands on antennas.
  3. By checking the RET position.
RET is known as Remote Electrical Tilt.

RET position in Rosenberger Antenna for Multi Band is side by side, whereas in ACE the RET position is top & bottom.

RET position in Rosenberger Antenna for Single Band is above the ports, whereas in ACE the RET position in the same line of the ports.

SIDE BY SIDE RET- Rosenberger Antenna multi Band

Top & Bottom RET- Multi Band antenna

Introduction to RF Antennas used in Reliance jio Installation project

Introduction to  RF Antennas, RET:

Jio uses the equipments of Samsung company and is manufactured in korea. There are two different type of brands of Antennas:
  1. Ace
  2. Rosenberger
Further Ace & Rosenberg Antennas are divided into separate Bands as follows
  1. Single Band
  2. Multi Band
  3. Penta Band
Single Band:
In Single Band the antenna is used only for one frequency band and that is only for 850Mhz, but the port order varies. .

Multi Band:
In Multi Band the antenna is used only for two frequency bands and that is 1.8Ghz & 2.3Ghz but port order varies.

Penta Band:
In Penta Band the antenna is used for all three frequency bands and that is 850Mhz, 1.8Ghz & 2.3Ghz but port order varies.

There are 3 Frequency Bands:
  1. 850 Mhz  (2G)
  2. 1800 Mhz (3G)
  3. 2300 Mhz (4G)
Ace Antennas:

SINGLE BAND (850Mhz)

MULTI BAND (1.8Ghz & 2.3Ghz)

Rosenberger Antennas:

SINGLE BAND (850Mhz)

MULTI BAND (1.8Ghz & 2.3Ghz)

RET ( Remote Electrical Tilt):

There are two ways to tilt the antenna:

  1. Mechanical Tilt - The coverage area is increased in side direction but reduced in central direction.
  2. Electrical Tilt  - The coverage area suffers a uniform reducation in the direction of antenna azimuth, the gain is also reduced uniformly.

LTE System overview for Reliance Jio Installation Project

Below is the detailed description of the equipments used in Reliance Jio project for Installation

In Reliance jio Installation project, the LTE system consist of Digital Unit known as CDU which is connected to backhaul switch, Radio Remote Unit (RRU) and GPS antenna by particular cables.

RF antenna is connected to RRU by RF jumper cables.

Basic Connectivity:

  1. The CDU is installed in the rack inside the outdoor unit.
  2. The CDU is connected to Backhaul switch through Optic Cable
  3. GPS antenna installed on the tower will be connected to CDU through GPS arrestor with gps cable.
  4. RRU is connected to CDU through optic cable known as CPRI.
  5. CDU,GPS arrestor and RRU has to be grounded to Grounding bar.
  6. RF antenna is connected to RRU y RF jumper cable.
  7. RF antenna will have 4 ports so 4 jumpers will be used.
  8. There is one port in RF antenna to give electrical tilt and is connected to RRU by RET cable.

Overview of RRU

Overview of GPS antenna and Arrestor

The GPS antenna will be installed on the tower, the gps arrestor will be 1m from the CDU.

Please note that the  above equipment are used only for Reliance Jio Installation & commissioning of 2g,3g &4g. No other service providers uses the same equipment.
